Emergency Protocols

In the Event of a Fire:

  1. Exit the building as quickly as possible, using the closest stairs.

  2. If you cannot use the stairs, and the fire is NOT in your unit, you should:
    • Wait inside your condo;
    • Call 911 to let them know who you are and what unit you are in; and
    • Call the front desk to let them know who you are and what unit you are in.

  3. If you cannot use the stairs and the fire IS in your unit, you should:
    • Leave your unit immediately
    • Wait in the stairwell. The stairs have ventilation fans that exhaust to the roof.
    • The stairs are where the fire department will be staging to fight a fire so the likelihood of being found quickly is greater

  4. If there is some reason that you cannot get into the stairwell, then wait in the elevator lobby with the doors closed. They can be manually closed.

White Board in the Fire Command Room: There is a white board in the fire command room with information on any resident known to have ADA mobility issues.

In the event of a FIRE ALARM:
Alarms in the Arras building are set to sound on 3 floors when there is a triggering event. If there is an alarm triggering event on one floor, the alarm will sound on that floor, the floor above and the floor below.

  • If the alarm sounds on your floor, you should immediately vacate the building through the stairwell. Never use the elevator.

  • If you have burned food, and smoke from an event like that has set off the alarm in your unit, it will be localized to your unit UNLESS the smoke moves into the common hallways and sets off a device in the hallway. If the hallway device is activated, the 3 floors surrounding it will all sound an alarm.

If you know the source, call the front desk: If you know the source, and it is not an actual fire emergency, you should call the front desk immediately to inform them of the incident so they can relay that information to the Asheville Fire Department - 828-255-0303

Annual Fire Drill: An annual fire drill with evacuation will be scheduled and coordinated by the Engineering staff with the assistance of Pye-Barker, our commercial fire protection and fire equipment maintenance supplier. All Hotel, Condo and Mandara personnel can practice evacuation. All Condo residents may participate in the evacuation if desired. The City of Asheville Fire Marshal is also invited to attend, assist and offer recommendations. An announcement about the fire drill will be made on PA system before and after by Engineering.

Summary and Reminder:

  • Evacuate using any stairwell
  • There is no designated meeting place
  • There are no fire wardens – we want everyone to evacuate the building if you can.
