Trash: Trash, garbage and other waste shall be kept in sanitary containers within each Unit and transported on a routine basis to either the trash chute located on each floor or the trash containers in the P2 garage near the condo lobby. Owners shall take all appropriate steps to avoid odors and an environment conducive to vermin.
Trash Chute: The trash chute may be used for both non-recyclable and recyclable trash.
- Black or White Bags for non-recyclable trash. Care shall be taken to avoid snagging or tearing the bag. Please use extra strong bags such as Glad ForceFlex, Hefty Ultra Strong or similar.
- Blue or Clear Bags for recyclables (mixed paper, cans and plastic). It is not necessary to sort different types of recyclable items.
- Bulky bags of trash forced through the chute doors which might clog the chute should be brought to the dumpster room and not placed in the trash chute.
8 AM to 9 PM: Out of respect for Owner units near the trash chute, please only use it between the hours of 8 AM and 9 PM.
No Loose Trash: All trash should be in strong bags and securely tied. No loose trash.
No Glass Down Chute: Glass bottles or containers when dropped into the trash chute (even if commingled with other recyclables or trash) often explode when they reach the bottom of the chute causing a hazard and/or a mess for the staff that transports the trash to the dumpster. Accordingly, any type of glass (wine/beer/liquor bottles, jars, etc.) must be taken down to the recycle bins that are placed just outside the condo lobby in the P2 garage. The glass can be in its own blue or clear bag or it can be commingled with other recyclable paper, plastic or metal. Our maintenance staff will transfer the recycle bags to the bins in the dumpster room that are subsequently picked up by Curbie.
Cardboard: Cardboard boxes must be broken down and taken to the designated cardboard recycling container(s) in the P2 garage near the condo lobby entrance. Styrofoam or other packing material must be removed and disposed of in a black or white bag for disposal as non-recyclable trash. Do not leave cardboard boxes in the hallway for others to take down. Cardboard can be a home for cockroaches or other pests.
What is Recyclable? Mixed paper, cans and plastic. Plastics recycling can be confusing. Just because something plastic has a recycling symbol does not mean it will be accepted in the Asheville recycling program. Recyclable plastic should be a bottle, tub, jug or jar. No clamshells. “Wishful recyclers” cause more harm than good. Curbie says: “When in doubt, throw it out.”
Items NOT Recyclable: Styrofoam or peanuts; plastic wrap; aluminum foil; food waste; disposable cups or lids (plastic and coffee); straws; diapers; receipts, shredded paper, paper towels, or napkins; pillows; bags; scrap metal or wood; clothing or textiles; tanglers like cords, hoses or wires; batteries; electronics; ceramic items; household glass or mirrors; toys. These non-recyclable items should be disposed of with the regular household trash in black or white bags. For further information on what is or is not recyclable, please refer to “What can I recycle” from the City of Asheville website: https://www.ashevillenc.gov/service/what-can-i-recycle/
Cat Litter/ Puppy Pads/ Diapers: Pet litter and diapers shall be double bagged in strong black or white bags and sent down the chute with non-recyclable trash. Never put in a paper bag which easily rips on the way down the chute. Cat litter bags that rip on the way down make a mess as much of the cat litter misses the bin.
Trash Chute Terminus: Only authorized personnel wearing safety glasses may enter the trash chute terminus room. Note that the dumpster room is a separate room and is to be used for recycling/ disposal of cardboard, glass and bulky items which might jam the trash chute.
No wood or construction material: These materials are not to be disposed of in the trash chute, trash containers in the garage or in the dumpster room. The building only handles removal of normal trash and recycling. Anything out of the ordinary like wood or construction material must be removed from the building by the owner. Such material can be taken to the Buncombe County transfer station or a junk removal company can be called.
In-sink Garbage Disposal: Proper use of the in-sink garbage disposal is required to prevent obstructions in shared plumbing pipes. Food waste should be ground with a strong flow of cold water followed by a cold-water rinse. Put only biodegradable food down the garbage disposal. Do not put the following in the in-sink disposal: grease, oil or fat; fibrous material like banana peels or celery stalks; expandable foods like pasta and rice; coffee grounds; egg shells; onion skins; nuts and shells; bones.
The following signs are displayed above the door to the trash chute:
